I think people identify with victims. For people to recognize that someone is a victim, they must recognize that they have been victimized. Such recognition implies that they have been treated wrongly. Everyone has been treated wrongly, and it is a moral victory for a wrong against you to be revealed as a wrong. It means that you don't deserve the consequences. Therefore, it is therapeutic to identify with, and love, victims. Even predators like to be seen as victims.

Because when it comes down to it your brain has to pick a side. The majority will choose the side of the victim rather than the criminal. We're basically taught to do that by learning the difference between right and wrong.
