First off..i am NOT against welfare. I think it is necessary when hard times fall on any one of us. Especially if a person is going to college to try to better themselves. Do you think the welfare reform laws that went in to effect about 5 years ago are working?
Is it really being reformed??

They need to totally change the whole Welfare thing. There is people who REFUSE to work who are getting welfare just because they are too lazy to get out and make some money. They want us hard workers to just hand over our money to them so they can eat Cheetos and watch Soaps and talk shows all day.

Well with the gst and all the goverment taxes they hit us with i wreckon welfare is totally justified. People that are emotionally unwell and physically unfit for work should be looked after...people who are imbetween jobs should be looked after...people who caring for a relative or part time workers ...but the drug users and the lazy who abuse the system make it hard for the genuine needy of welfare...Fair enough to have a little party every now and then and have some time out of the wake up work sleep wake work wake work ...Life is for living not working...If the junkies would get a grip and stop spending all there money on heroin and speed it would save the rest of us a lot of money. The welfare reforms are a load of *** they just make the media beleive they are changing everything and all is good but they are secretly screwing over the genuine needy. Centrelink in Aus is a joke they try and trick you they disrepect you they just don't give a dam about anyone they treat everyone like they are all junkies. Somethings gotta change to seperate the junks from the genuine....

there are many myths regarding welfare, most of which have been spun by white republican men who wanted to get elected.

Ever notice that only women are villainized for being on welfare? Yep, we can thank our politicians for that. There is little mention of the MEN who FATHER these children. If they would support their children there would be no more need for welfare.

Now, about the facts:
50% of adults on welfare do have a job.
75% of adults on welfare have at one child under the age of 5.
There is no difference in family sizes between welfare and non-welfare familes. (welfare moms do not have more children to get a bigger check)

additionally, going to college on welfare is not an option. Only 3 out of 10 people on welfare are allowed to participate in "educational activities' which can last no longer than 12 months. College is not an "approved educational activity"

Lastly, I walked this road. I grew up on welfare and then was destined to repeat the cycle. I fought like heck to get through college and was penalized several times by the welfare system many times. I will explain, I hope you keep reading.

I was a single mom, on welfare. I worked 3 days a week cleaning houses and I was in college full-time on two days per week, I reported every cent I made to the welfare office. I maintained a high GPA and I really thought they would consider me a "dream client" at the welfare office. I dressed nicely, used proper grammar, and was very respectful to them.

Instead, I was called in one day and told that I would have to drop out of school to begin the Welfare to Work program. I was instructed to go work at a public park for 11 days per month. I was carefully instructed not to take any days from my cleaning shedule and instead I should not attend college classes anymore. I was STUNNED.

I did not drop out of school, I refused to. I was then told that I would need to repay the welfare office for one months rent ($300) and I could not longer get assistance.

I am proud to say that I stuck it out and I now have a masters degree.

I don't Know! First: Welfare State Where? In Europe? In Australia? In the U.S.A?
I'm from Italy and welfare state is the family, no money from the State for us.

I think everyone agrees that it still needs reform--what kind of reform is the million, no, billion dollar question.
