It is illegal, they have to pay you for time worked or they can get in a lot of trouble. The question is, if your company is so shady, why are you still there? Yes, he can't require you to work without pay, which is effectively what a mandatory meeting would be.

You should forget this if it is something like a christmas party or such.
But a business meeting? Got to pay you.

If you are salaried they don't have to pay you. Trust me. A former employer of mine expected at minimum 6 hours a week OT. We were salaried and it was not compensated.
