For my masters thesis, i have suspended a large silica test mass on a loop of fine silk thread to isolate the mass from background noise.
Further welded to this mass is a silica slide. I excite the resonant modes of the slide using an electrostatic drive plate in a vacuum, and by measuring the rate at which they decay determine their mechanical loss factor. I am suspending the test mass + slide as a pendulum to reduce energy dissipation from the system. I am trying to find the right words to explain why suspending the system as a pendulum reduces energy dissipation away from the system, and reduces noise but i am struggling - please help!
