A lot of us do understand that, but we need to hear it said, every once in awhile. Thanks!

I just wish you could give my husband a good talking-to. I never felt bad about myself until a year into my second marriage ... he criticizes almost every part of my body ... I have scars from old surgeries and have MS, but he has me convinced there is not an uglier woman in the world. I really do not look that bad, but I can barely look in a mirror anymore. Thank you for saying what you said ... it helps to hear a man say it. I understand wives don't have to be supermodels, but my husband doesn't.

Thanks, we do appreciate that. However, believe it or not, it's not entirely about being attractive to the opposite sex. It's about societal pressures. Beauty, for women, equals "social capital," just as success in the workplace (and thus having a larger bank account) equals the same for men. In today's society, a woman's social status is tied to her looks, and the media has made that "status" impossible to obtain. (Even the models and actresses aren't as "beautiful" as their portrayal, thanks to air brushing, lighting, plastic surgery.) On a more basic level, attraction is about "fitness" (for procreation), but look at some of the emaciated models (many of whom ARE medically underweight, with stats like 5'10-5'11 and 115-118 pounds, which is about the norm for models) out there and tell me if they look "fit" for bearing children...these girls are lucky if they're having a period. Don't get me wrong, of course being overweight is unhealthy, but so is being underweight, and it is THAT standard that women are being held to. So just as many men feel the societal pressures to obtain wealth (and therefore status) many women feel the same pressure to achieve an unobtainable physical "perfection."

You don't have to be supermodels that is true, most guys standards are pretty low.

Thanks for your comment! We do seem to be bombarded with images of what the 'perfect' woman is, and for many of us this is not an attainable goal.

So, it is great to hear your comments.
