I don't know what the person means that is saying not to get an iPod if you have a PC running a Windows OS. I've had different models of iPods (Mini, Shuffle and Nano) running on a PC with Windows XP and have not had a single problem.

To load tracks onto an MP3 player, you first have to ask; do you own a mac or a PC? Then, how much hard drive space is on that machine? This will determain which one to buy. Whatever you do, do not get an iPod if you own a PC that runs Microsoft Windows OS. Now, buying music online requires a credit card so that is an option as long as you aren't afraid of ID theft which is 'fairly rare'. Either this or you must buy MP3 credits in the form of a plastic card from a store like Best Buy for example. On the other hand, if your computer has a CD drive capable of burning/writing/recording CDs, then you should be able to easily 'rip' music from CDs already in your collection, then transfer them.

The technology behind MP3 players seems complicated at first but is usualy pretty straight forward when you learn more about them. The best way to learn is to buy one that's not outrageously expensive, and just expirament. Good luck :P

You can import songs from CD's for free( if you own the CD of course). My MP3 collection consists of a mixture of CD and iTunes songs( I have an iPod, get your son an iPod). iTunes is quite intuitive. Very easy to use. You need a broadband internet connection to download songs.
