Freshwater is way easy- clean it four times a year (at least) and keep the filter working, make sure you medicate the fish when they need it... but a salt water.... whoo. You're practically MARRIED to the thing with having to keep the pH balanced and the temperature within .5 degrees, and the right salinity... stick with freshwater.

I've heard it was a lot harder, but I have no experience with salt water aquariums. I've also heard from those who have had them that they are not any harder to maintain once you get the cycle started. But then they added that getting the cycle started was definitely difficult, and since the fish cost SOOOO much more money each, knowing what you're doing, and doing it right the first time, become a much higher priority, as you may well know. God Bless you.

Tons and tons. Be sure you are willing to plunk down big buckos for a saltwater tank. And the really sad part is that those tropical fish generally come from the Phillippine area, and those who catch them poison the immediate water with cyanide to make catching them easier. However, it also means your very expensive tropical salt water fish die way earlier than they would have..... It's a mess hon. Stay with fresh water...

It depends on what you have (after all, freshwater fish like discus are not the easiest to keep).
While you will need to know the basic fundamentals of keeping marine fish, a basic fish-only saltwater tank with hardy fish like damsels isn't that much harder to maintain than most freshwater fish set-ups.
Maintaining more elaborate fish-only or reef set-ups, though, is more complex and will require genuine dedication, additional equipment, specialized lighting, attention to deal, and lots of knowledge (and money).
