And also should I have it on the Saturday before (17th) or have a few friends over on say the (23rd) that way some parents can get some last minute shopping over with? I would have her party on the 17th, not the 23rd. my birthday is close to Christmas, too, but it's the 24, and one year I had my party on the 22, and NO ONE came. I was really hurt, even though it was because no one was home on the 22nd.
As for her party, my favorite parties were always when I had 2 or 3 friends over and we had take-out food, watched a bunch of movies, and stayed up late telling secrets and stuff. This doesn't cost very much, and it is a ton of fun. Good luck!

I think 9 year olds are more interested in sleep-overs. I would do something before the 23rd b/c a lot of her friends could be going out of town for the holidays. You could rent some movies and order pizza for the girls and have a sleepover, or take them to the movie theater and then pick up some pizza for the sleepover on your way home. Girls are pretty good at entertaining themselves...get some good books "scary stories to tell in the dark", and some barbies together and you should be okay. 13 going on 30 is a really cute movie! I'm sure they would love that.

Just found some cute toys at K-Mart for $ 3.75- 12.00 that would be perfect for a 9 yo. The sale is on, I think, through Christmas. There was a large variety of good stuff.

I also agree with the idea of a sleep over for 1 or 2 friends. They can watch a movie or play games and sleep on the floor in the living room (so you can keep an eye on them) like a "camp out".
I would do it on the 17th.

Here's an inexpensive but memorable idea. I did it with a friend of mine, and neither of us will ever forget how special that day was......

Take either her age or the date on which she was born (the 21st). Use that amount of money, and block out an entire day for just you guys. Then gather some coupons (ones for buy 1 get one free or free samples are great). Finally, make a list (based on the coupons and your own imagination of what you think she would enjoy) of things the two of you can do together.

Example.....a) go for a sundae at McDonalds b)go to a park and go sledding or play on the playground c) go for a coffee or hot cocoa d) go to a dollar store and spend just a portion e)take some pictures and scrapbook a little photo album together f) go to a museum or somewhere like that if it's free (or on their "cheap" day g) go buy the fixings to make a birthday ornament or craft and do it together

Then let her choose whatever her heart desires on that list, and pack in as many things as she would like that are possible with the budget you guys have. (This is the fun part - I'm not kidding. We got really creative.)

Finally, if your money and coupons won't allow you to eat out all the meals during your special day, pack a lunch with fun treats to take as a picnic (yes, this is possible even in winter - car picnics can be fun).

Basically, you will have spent your entire day making fun memories, having an adventure on a shoestring budget, and getting even closer to your sister. She will be so blessed by that, and will remember that for years to come. Honestly, I remember those kinds of activities a lot more than the couple of birthday parties with friends over. I know my mom did them, but don't really recall what we did.

I think that the 23rd sounds good so that the parents can go get some last min shopping done. I would also suggest getting pizza and making a cake (box mix) that way its not too expensive and the kids will be happy. Maybe a few balloons for decoration, the kids will play with them too!

Its nice of you to have a b-day party for your little sister. You are a great brother.
You could have the party the weekend before on a Saturday. Have the kiddies come over and just get a cake & ice cream and some kool-aid or something to drink. If the kids are all little girls, I'm sure they are going to want to just play in her room the whole time. Maybe you could rent a movie or something. They only have to be there for 2 or 3 hours. Usually kids this age entertain themselves. You can do all this for under $50. Just make it a nice day for her.

She is at the age where she might like a magazine subscription or even a slumber party with supplies (makeup, icecream ect) provided. Maybe let her pick a couple friends and treat the girls to a manicure. Not sure how girly she is by my daughter would love all of the above.

New game that is out that seems to be popular here is called Dream Life. My 11 yr is getting that for Xmas and I have heard other girls talking about it.

have it on the 17th so its not so close to christmas because chances are that most children wont be able to make it on the 23rd. invite only a few or here close friends and have it at the park it is free and you wont have to clean up!! Kids love it there!!

happy holidays
