Well most of the colonists were british. The main weapon was ambush. It was difficult for the soldiers(of the crown)as thier combatants were civilians.Don't forget Washington was a colonel in the colonial army(british)The French through Quebec supplied the insurgents with weaponry mainly rifles, bayonets, knives and gun powder.and were not adverse in getting thier indians to attack the brits(under thier direction)Further The french supplied the insurgents with ships to harry the british in local waters.French officers often were in charge of the insurgents.Especially up north where these officers could come and go as they pleased to canada. This was why the brits decided to oust the french from canada. Some of the worst atrocities of the war of independance were commited by french led indians.Even the great John Paul(naval chief)was a scot, and an officer in the british navy.
