For example, a science class is worth 4 points; mathematics is worth 3 points; History is worth 2 points; and English is worth 3 points. The values of the grade letters are as follows, A= 4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. What is the GPA of a student who made a “C” in Trigonometry, a “B” in American History, an “A” in Botany, and a “B” in Microbiology?

Can you help with this one!? Thanks!

Feanor, 3+2+4+4 is not 12, it's 13, and that changes you total...

Your looking for a weighted average

Weighted average = weighted total/total weights
in your case
(2*3 + 3*2 + 4*4 + 3*4)/(3+2+4+4) = 40/13 = 3.077

Yeah, I made an arithmetic error...But the approach to the problem is still well stated, so that you hopefully understand how to solve the problem on your own, next time.

3 x 2 (Trig) + 2 x 3 (History) + 4 x 4 (Botany) + 4 x 3 (Microbiology) = 40/ 13 (attempted points) = 3.077 GPA

(2*3+3*2+4*4+3*4) / (13) = 3.07 = 'B'

the 13 comes from adding up all the points (or credits, as they're called in college).

Trig = 2/3 = .666
US Hist. = 3/2=1.5
Botany = 4/4 =1
Microbio = 3/4= 0.75

.666+1.5+1+.75=3.916
3.916/4=.979
4*.979=3.916

GPA = 3.916
