Travis is right, TweakUI really is good, I've got a clear desktop too. It does loads of other stuff, like you can increase the number of folders that XP home can recognise.
And its best not to just hide the icons because you can accidentally click on them, its a pain.
I don't always run windows in full screen and prefer a clear desktop. Your programs are still in the start menu so whats the problem!

right click desktop screen, select arrange icons by, then click on the option for show desktop icons so the tick dissapears and so do all the icons. then right click taskbar and select new toolbars and click on desktop option. now all the icons(in your case just recycle bin) will appear in a list like the start menu and you can select your programs from it. thank you in advance for my 10 points!!!

You might be interested in Microsofts "power toys". Tweakui will allow you to remove the recycle bin along with some other nice things. You can download tweakui by clicking this link http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
Or the Microsoft power toys website is here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
