Her cousin was probably just being a jerk. Talk to Emily face to face, and keep your eyes open for non-verbal communication too.

Confront Emily,its the only way to get answers.Try getting her cousin in the same room and talk to them at the same time, and I'm sure you'll be able to tell who is lying.
