Yes. there should be smoke alarms in the house. You are responsible for replacing the batteries when they go flat. Regarding the Fire Brigade Inspection, remember you cannot fit any thing like the items mentioned to the land lords property, without his permission, they could violate his buildings insurance and that will affect the tenant also.

In the UK There is no requirement to have smoke alarms fitted.
If they are fitted it is up to the tenant to make sure they work, and to replace the batteries as required, the cost cannot be claimed back from the landlord

Under UK law, all rented property MUST have adequate fire protection, this includes smoke alarms. This is regardless of the age of the property, the type of fire protection is dependant on the amount of occupiers in the property.
To get the exact requirments you need to contact your local council building regulations office or the local fire brigade.
The fines for non-compliance are astronomical !!! for the land lord, I am talking several thousands

I'm not sure, Pinky, but they only cost a few pounds, so why not buy one or two of your own, just to be on the safe side?
Mine are very good at reminding me to take lamb chops out from under the grill!

I would think it's a local or state law if there is one. I think in Maryland there has to be one. (I could be incorrect).
Also I think the question should say "working" smoke alarm.

In the UK it is a legal requirement if you are letting a house. The landlord should also supply at least one fire extinguisher.
