Not really... boredom is a reflection of feeling of something that you really don't feel challenged anymore. You get boring because the things that you used to do and face in your life are not challenging you no more.
It's not basically a despair feeling at all. Despair is where you feel hopeless and dejected by something you want to achieve.
Boredom is more about tediousness and tiresomeness because you are in the situation where monotony and dullness are the only one things you gotta face and deal with.
No challenge or less challenge in your life surely will make you boring and dull.

I believe that boredom is fundamentally a lack of imagination. This world has so much variety in it that there is never an actual situation of 'nothing to do' ; for instance look at the number of categories in Yahoo answers, and the wide range of approaches. There is something in or out there to interest everyone.
Successful aging is being able to cope with change, and practicing change is an antidote to boredom. Today and tomorrow do something different, for no other reason.
Go explore, and enjoy the journey!

Nice thought.
I guess it can be for some people.
However i have to say, i have experienced both extreme despair, and extreme boredom, and they are most definitely different.
But i suppose the common factor involved is lack of motivation, now the question is, is the lack of motivation a cause or a symptom?

Nope, sometimes boredom happens when you're not challenged...when you've outgrown something...and sometimes someone.
Or boredom is when you're asked to play the piano when you really want to paint, or play basketball....or just get out into the sunshine.
Boredom is also when someone is putting their ideas on you but not inspiring you...sometimes certain teachers are boring! But don't tell them, because they don't know it.
Dispair is when you have tried everything, but nothingworks...then it's better to walk, and sometimes run away from the problem.......until you can face it again in the sunshine.

no.
despairing people go searching for ways to alleviate despair (drinking etc)
boredom is a distinct lack of care for ones surroundings.
boredom is a lot easier to alleviate that despair that is for sure.

Not at all. What you might consider boredom today might just be a chance to relax another day.
