Many people experience "flooding" when angry--rushing or pounding in the ears, temporary tunnel vision, heart racing, red face, shaking hands. If you can feel these symptoms coming on, you can choose to control them.

The first step is simply becoming aware of this reaction.

The second step is sensing that it is coming on, and being aware enough to sense what caused it.

The third step is to choose differently.

You see, anger has the same roots, chemically speaking, in the brain as fear. Most anger is really rooted in fear--you become angry when you are fearful of being embarrassed, fearful of losing something (dignity?), or you are just plain afraid.

If you can confront your fears, and realize that they are probably unjustified, then you can easily control the flooding. You will decide that it is easier to face what your are truly afraid of than to deal with the physical feelings of anger. Additionally, this has the added benefit of helping you manage relationships with others on much healthier levels--you're working with honesty instead of trying to mask all of your inadequacies.

I sit/stand where I am and I breathe. I usually clench my fists and keep them at my sides and close my eyes. I let go when I feel my breaths are soft and even. I think about how stupid I will look/be if I do something rash like punch a wall or scream a profanity. The important thing to do is to breathe and focus on your breathing and you will calm down soon. Then I am grateful that I didn't do anything stupid and just breathed it out.

First of all, I pray for strength to settle down and be tolerant. Then I try to imagine myself in that persons situation. A little compassion can go a long way.
