A horror movie. One of the most important things is to always build suspence. Give a reason the audience to be scared. Find the audience's weakness. What will they be scared of? Find it, and show it. You also want to prolong a scary scene. Make the audience think nothing is going to happen because nothing is happening.
Try also to do something fresh and new. Do not do something someone else has done, because it will not be scary. The audience has seen it already.
Try inserting the audience into the character's postition. The audience will not feel scared if they are not in your characters' position.

For a good horror movie you need blood, guts, suspense, and a good story. I think now days the hooror movies aren't that good. They just seem to copy each other. The number one thing you need for a good horror movie is something original.

I think a good horror movie has to be more left to the imagination then in your face blood and guts. To me a subtle horror movie is much more effective then the kind where all kinds of blood is being spilled. One such movie is The Others with Nicole Kidman and another is the original The Haunting with Jullie Harris and Claire Bloom. They scared the hell out of me.

Everyone likes stuff to jump out in a scary movie but sometimes people don't realize that the only thing that makes that scene scary is the sound effects. Watch your favorite horror movie and listen to the sound effects as stuff does jump out. Music is the most important.

While surprise is definitely a main element I would add to it suspense. Here is something that I'm stealing from Alfred Hitchcock but it makes sense: A bunch of men are playing cards around the table and then all of a sudden a bomb goes off. That's not suspense nor is it very clever. Now imagine a bunch of men around a table and they know a bomb is about to go off. What do they do? How much time do they have? What would you do in that situation?
