Short answer: because jail is no fun.

Long answer: regardless of laws, the behaviors and virtues you listed ARE what most people want to do. It's a common misconception that without any kind of controls or influences, people would naturally kill each other for an apple or whatever. Most of us learn very early in life that being kind has good results for us, and being cruel has bad consequences. Most of us (except for anti-social psychopaths) also have a strong compassion or empathy drive that is probably innate rather than learned. Unhappiness in others usually makes us sad as well.

Laws themselves have evolved from social contracts which people have found to be most effective for civilization to thrive. If you don't want to be good, you probably won't survive for long.

Really a magnificent question? Especially in this cruel world today. Most of the answers in philosophy you will be enlightened from is "World as Will and Representation" by Arthur Schoepenhauer. Aristotle ( more of a comic with limricks and slogans), and Sigmund Freud to learn more about the selfish inhibited bunch that many of us are.
Moreover we are born with these traits but are supposed to be guided by a good upbringing, but that sometimes is over ridden by the outside influences, thus becoming the product of the outer environment than the ones that are instilled at birth. Like evil vs. good, the balance is kept from within your own mind, for we are given a free will, that was a free gift from the good graces of G-D and to let the frigid insecure feelings overwhelm you is a disgrace to being of mankind, for we are human with frailities and we all enjoy happiness, kindness, and love. Why deny yourself let alone others the opportunity of sharing that with others? I myself think it is ludicrous not to treat others with the same kindness that we would want as well. But the first lesson to learn about that is to not expect others to treat you well, for if they do not, dont be surprised, just walk away and wish them well for they are truely lost. And dont pity them, there is no sympathy for the Devil. Science and Religion have one common denominator, and that is that mankind is born basically with the same instilled natural habits and with the right upbringing they will for the most part will be okay. But when influenced badly will turn for human's in general have a weakness, (denial), and will be selfish.

What's in it for me? My own personal happiness.

If no one was good, helpful, kind, tolerant or understanding, I'd hate the world. I'd say, "Why live?" But because there are many people with these traits... it keeps us living and the world moving, gives us hope, and as cheesy as it sounds, spreads love. The lord knows, if I wasn't any of these, I would never have found such great people in my life who support me and love me.

because that is what decent human beings should be regarded as: as in being helpful, respectful, tolerant, understanding and as people who have real emotions and feelings for the people and other things in life. i think that what keeps people behaving in a good fashion is the fact they are so in tune with life and living their lives to the good they realise how it is important to treat others with respect and not be so ignorant and arrogant about it

We don't just stop at our fingertips. Someone who is good, helpful, kind and tolerant changes all life for the better, not just the circumstances of their own narrow existence. Unfortunately, a person who is evil, stubborn, cruel, and intolerant does to. The behaviour of any one person impacts all life. It would be great if we did good things because we wanted to though and not because we should do them or are forced to do them.

A good heart. You don't have to get something in return, it's the feelings you get from just helping a person...Can't you imagine what life would be like without those kinds of people?? Besides, EVERYTHING has a consequence, good or bad, what goes around comes around. I firmly believe in that for sure.

Good, helpful, kind and tolerant people make everyone's life, inclusing yours, a lot more easy and much more pleasant. I dion;t know how you feel about arrogant, stuck up, rude, bitchy, selfish, annoying, nasty, and narrow minded people but in general I do not like to hang out with them too often.

I do everything I want to do, which includes helping people. Reaching out to do a good turn is very rewarding and makes me feel good. It also makes the other person feel that there are nice people in the world.
