Waffle irons impeded her learning of Braille. She had to wait for the skin to heal before reading again. She soon learned not to read them.

Just? She had no way to communicate because she could not see and could not hear so she could not know what was before her. She learned to understand what items were, but how do you understand concepts? Did she have the same cues that you or I might have to see good people from those who might take advantage? Even as a sighted person who can hear, It is difficult.
One of the obsticles in her life was her parents who did not expect much from her. She could have lived up to their expectations instead of Sullivans.
She became a successful person during a time when not many women stood out... so I guess being a woman, at that time would also be an obsticle.

In certain aspects, we are our own worst enemies. In others, it's just luck of the draw and the hand we're dealt in life. I guess to use your quote, I would be the person nibbling on the fruit and appetizers, because there's a wicked long line to the buffett, and people were taking too long and gabbing to notice the rest of us waiting. Another quote similar to yours: "There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: 'What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass! And at the other end of the bar the world is full of the other type of person, who has a broken glass, or a glass that has been carefully knocked over (usually by one of the people calling for a larger glass), or who had no glass at all, because they were at the back of the crowd and had failed to catch the barman's eye. " - The Truth by Terry Pratchett

Anything that she couldn't see or hear like a honking car comming right at her. Just kidding, the time that she was born at in terms of quality care and education. She did manage to manage however, that says alot.

Her parents. They were not able to take her out of her world the way Anne Bancroft's character did.
Herself. She did not want things to change because her parents were giving her anything she wanted.

umm that being blind and deaf only leaves you with like 3 senses, touch taste and smell, and its hard to really get your way around with only 3 senses, its like walking around in emptiness. and she didnt see or hear the big truck coming at her at 90 miles an hour
