Cat in the Hat because its cool. Tom Swift and his Repellatron just because you should. Runaway Robot by Lester Del Ray because you never did read it. Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein because it's wierd. Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse because you'll never understand it. The Abortion by Richard Brautigan because he killed himself, I guess that goes for Hemingway too.

Major Barbara by Bernard Shaw is all about society, wealth and money vs. religion. Shaw really makes you think.

The Importance of Being Ernest byOscar Wilde is a funny comedy about relationships.

These are plays.

Oh, and I love The Taming of The Shrew by Shakespeare.

the following is probably not what you have in mind, since non-fiction, and along the lines of the "psycho-mystical", rather than a classic assigned in lit. 101, but i assure you it will definitely change the way you look at the world: *the complete idiot's guide to toltec wisdom*. essentially, a manual for helping one to be a more "conscious " human---definitely helps one to avoid many of the dramas and emotional/psychological hardship most humans mistakenly consider a "normal" part of life.;-)

I was surprised by how much my students have liked "The Kite Runner" and "Ender's Game." Much more positive than I could have anticipated.
