Do you really need to upgrade? Relatively few applications are "processor bound"; in most cases, your can improve your performance more by adding memory or disk. If you are using your machine for games sometimes it's better to upgrade you video card as that could limit high end performance.

What you are going to do with it. Some processors are better for some things. You could go with the most expensive which is good for anything. If you tell me what ur gonna do with it ill tell you

You also need to know the socket of your motherboard. Not all cpus will go into any motherboard.
