Snape, while waiting to be interviewed for a teaching position at Hogwarts, overheard Sybil Trelawny prophesying about a child who would eventually be the downfall of the Dark Lord. The prophecy mentioned the month in which the child was born and Snape rushed to tell Voldemort, but didn't hear the whole thing. Voldemort assumed that the prophesy was about Harry and killed them to get to Harry. The curse backfired and weakened Voldemort and gave Harry the Scar.
What Dumbledore later reveals to Harry is that their were actually two boys that were born close to the same time that the prophesy speaks of, Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. Although everyone, including Dumbledore feel that Harry is the "Chosen One", I think that Neville is going to play an important part in the actual demise of the Dark Lord.

All of the other answers lies. This is what really happens, Voldemort was Born in a small village in Europe. Then he was at the park and Harry's parents as kids were there. Then Harry's dad took Voldemort's snichzle, and also the two of them beat him up. So Voldemort waited until they made a time machine and found the fountain of youth. Then he learned the way of magic then he drank from the fountain of youth and went to the time Harry's parents had harry and he killed them.

Voldemort interpreted the first half of the prophecy (cuz that was the only part Snape heard) and figured that he needed to kill Harry Potter before he grew up, because Harry was going to be the vanquisher of the Dark Lord. James and Lily Potter simply got in his way.

So that Voldemort did not die, he felt he had to. The prophecy stated that they could not both live forever. There is no definite clue that states that Harry was the boy that Voldemort should have been going after. But some boy and Voldemort can not both live forever.

Because Lily actually cheated on James with Voldemort and Voldemort is Harry's actual father. He killed them because he didn't want to pay child support.

I haven't read the book. Just from watching the movies I had the impression that Voldemort was trying to take over the wizarding world and Harry's parents opposed him

Because of the prophecy. He knew he had to kill the kid born that day. and Harry's parents got in the way.
They also were members of the original order of the Phoenix.

Well first off they opposed him. But the main reason he killed him, was because he heard PART of the prophecy and tried to kill him. I would read the end of book 5, or go to mugglenet.com for more info.
