My middle name is Alene and would love to name my daughter Alena. How do you pronounce the first 'a' in Alena? Like 'a' in the word at, or like 'uh'? Just curious. I don't want for her to spend her life telling people how to pronounce her name.

I would have pronounced is Ah-le-na. My mom's name is Elena though, and she pronounces it at Eee-lay-na.

I would pronounce the 'A' in Alena 'uh'. That's usually how that name would be pronounced, but people don't read much anymore and so often don't know how to pronounce anything. You could name your daughter Alice and have people ask, "Is that pronounced Uh-LEES?"

I would pronounce it as in " a " for apple. What a lovely name.I think Alene would be pronounced Ay - lene but changing the last letter to an " A " changes the pronunciation from a long sound "ay" to a short sound " a ". You and your daughter have to decide what sounds best!!!

When i first looked at the name I pronounced it with A as in able. If you spell her name like this she will spend the rest of her life telling ppl how to pronounce her name. Its a little confusing.

Uh-Lay-Nah, or Uh-Lee-Nah. Your choice. If I were you I would choose the latter spelling, otherwise it could be confused with Elaina (Eh-Lay-Nah) when she says her name. My name is Astrid, and a substitute teacher at my school was calling roll and obviously didn't know how my name was to be pronounced, so when she got to my name she started saying, "A, S, T, R, I, D". That annoyed me. Fortunately 99% of people just say it how it's pronounced (As-Trid). I go by my nickname usually though - Asta (As-Tah), or Assy amongst friends :)

I would say "uh"- lena. I had to correct people all my life-- it's really not that serious. I just correct people and move on-- it's no big deal. I actually love that my name has a unique spelling.

I would pronounce it Uh-lee-na, but wouldn't you just pronounce it the same way you pronounce your own middle name?
