An icon has appeared on my bar and when I ran the mouse over it it says it's for java updates to my computer. This has never appeared before so I don't know what to do. I've seen the word java but I don't have a clue what it is. Should I download these updates or cancel them? Thanks for your help.

You have all been very helpful to me, so much so that I am not going to be able to pick a best answer. I will leave it to the community who know about these Java things, to choose a best answer. Thanks for all your answers. Cheers.

If you already have Java7 from SunJava, yes right click on the icon with your mouse an update the automatic download from SunJava.

Many of the videos, and pictures that you see including alot of HTML text run under Javascript on IE. Good to have and will not harm your system. Alot of videos will tell you that you have to download javascript.

Note to Minddoctor: Java and JavaScript are two completely different things despite their similar names.

Java is a programming language, in this context it's the language some people use to write games and applications that you might see embedded on web pages for you to play with. To use these games, etc you must have the Java plug in for your browser installed on your machine or you can't use them. This message you're seeing is because the Java plug in runs in the background and checks for new version of the plug in every so often. When it find a new version that you don't have installed it'll inform you via this icon that you're seeing. You don't have to install the update if you don't want and personally I'd just ignore it unless you're having specific problems with Java content on web pages.

Simple... Just download the updates. Your computer knows what its doing. The Java system on your computer automatically updates itself whenever there is a new update available.

These Updates simply aid your computer in perfoming some specific tasks, it also supports your pc when you're surfing the web. It kinda works like flash player.

(You need java to play online games & view webpages such as www.bmw.com - video version)

Have fun

Java is thoroughly unfastened because of authors status as much as sunlight microsystems and actually risking their jobs and careers to make it so. sunlight initially wanted to sell Java after it replaced into stepped forward however the considerable coders and designers protested and threatened to stroll out if sunlight did not launch it for unfastened. sunlight ultimately caved in and Java has been unfastened on condition that. What isn't unfastened is for particular Java appropriate kit such because of the fact the IDE which sunlight sells to help pay for Java progression. All Java enhancements, JDKs and such are unfastened. so a approaches as i know all java browser plugins are unfastened besides. you could consistently get the unfastened one from sunlight in case you have something else.
