It helps with bright lights especially outside on sunny days it stops the glare.
It actually does help alot when you are trying to track a high kick or pass. Not as well as a tinted visor but those visors a terrible unless it is really bright otherwise yiou can't focus on the ball.

The black marks absorb light (not reflect) so they can see better.
The only advantage it gives is the ability to see, or at least think that they see better.
