yes it is safe..... I have a 5 pound and a 2 1/2 pound chihuahua's and they slept in my sons bassinet with him when he was only 3 4 days old... they protected him more then anything..... but is your sister;s dog good natured ot hipper active? but the child should be safe because dogs tend to be curious but usually run away when the baby makes a noise.

I think as long as the dog isn't left alone with the baby then it should be ok. Just like with any animal it could try to "take on the parenting" of the baby and suffocate it. My parents had a full sized dachshund when my brother was a baby and nothing happened. The sister with the dog just needs to make sure the dog isn't alone with the baby. If the dog acts jealous put the dog in it's kennel or another room then the baby. Maybe introduce the two of the before the baby's mom goes out of town.

You haven't specified in what instance the dog and the baby would be alone. Obviously the baby would be safe in it's crib if the dog was on the floor, etc. However I would NOT leave a newborn, infant, or toddler on the floor with the dog. Just in case. Children are a precious gift and it's better to be safe than sorry. Quite recently my friend's small dog bit her infants foot right in front of her and out of the blue just because he thought the way it was kicking it's feet was interesting. The baby was in the swing. And the dog didn't want to let go at first, the bite broke the skin.

I don't care what kind of dog people have a Chihuahua has teeth and can break the skin. My sister had the most gentle lab for 5 years when she had her son and this dog became very jealous after she had a baby, their dog started growling at the baby. They kept the dog away from my nephew and the dog was never left alone with him. After he was about 3 the dog fell in love with him but it was not until he was old enough to go outside by himself did they let them out together. People love their pet as I do mine but we have to watch them with kids, it is not that hard after all.

i wouldn't leave it alone. just because the dog is 3lbs and "harmless", doesn't mean it won't get jealous. chi's especially can be that way, and since it is not used to a baby, that can cause problems. if the baby is sleeping, make sure the door is closed tight (little dogs can jump), and have a baby minitor. there might not be anything to worry about, but it's better to be safe than sorry, right?

little dogs tend to be more hyper than bigger dogs. I don't recommend leaving a baby alone with the dog until it gets used to the baby's scent and gets used to having a baby around the house. Just let the sister who's babysitting know NOT to leave the baby alone with the little dog.

Why would the baby be alone? If you're talking about naptime and sleeping at night, then the baby will be in a crib or playpen, and the dog wouldn't be able to get near the baby. Honestly, there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Listen to "people" in this case they are correct. And any size dog can hurt a baby. But why would the child's aunt leave him alone with her dog? If she is caring for the babe, she should not be leaving it alone, Period!

recently I heard on CNN never leave an infant alone with a dog. People might say their dogs are harmless but remember they are still an animal.
