I have a neighbor that is diagonally across from me on a private road in a tiny town in Maine. I have about .30 acre between me and his shack. I have a 60W bulb in a tasteful outdoor fixture that I leave on through the night. He objects to this. He says I am cramping his lifestyle and that my husband and I are "city" people that need to leave the area and go where people need lights. He cant sleep with our light shining in his window. He put curtains up, I offered to put a smaller bulb in-but he started cursing that my house NEEDS to be dark by 7 or so. I have MANY outdoor lights, but I use just that one in the front. All the other people on the street with the exception of one who has a motion light leave theirs on too, but ours is the one that bothers him. He heckles my husband when he is outside, screaming at the top of his lungs that my husband is a piece of "s" and a womens private part/we had to call the troopers once, didnt do much-now neighbor revs ancient truck every day at 7.

Just to let you know, I cant find any ordinances about lighting or a time to turn off lights-we have NO streetlights -we live in a forest, literally, on an unpaved road.
We have lived here 3 months and now the guy is saying we are intrusive. The trooper stated he didnt know of any law regarding lights-and the neighbor is FAR away from my house.
The neighbor revs his ancient truck every morning at 7-7:30 for about 20 minutes. Faithfully. Apparently it doesnt bother anyone the amount of noise he makes that early. He also waits by his window for my husband to go outside to work, wash the car, go to the garage, etc. Isnt that like stalking? ANY help is appreciated.

some people have a symdrome called corncobinassitis, it's permanent and there is no vaccine, all you can do is not be a pushover, do your research on noise ordinance, he will not be the one with the last laugh, if you do not let him push you around. call the police when neccesary, if the harassment goes on, you may need a restraining order or something of the like, dumb rednecks just never learn, so help him out alittle 8) good luck

Is it possible for you to put in motion activated lights? Perhaps you can offer to buy shades for the neighbor to use in combination with the curtains he put up? Or maybe buy him some clips to hold the curtains closed tight. He sounds really wacky and I think for my own safety and sanity I would do my best to appease him as long as it does not violate you or your husband.

BTW, if you are cramping his lifestyle is it because he wanders around outdoors at night naked, he sells drugs off his front porch through the night, he has friends who come over late at night and make fun of him cause the neighbors use a light or what? That is such a strange comment to make. I would understand if he said you were making it hard for him to sleep, but cramping his lifestyle sounds weird in this situation.

I've had problems like that in the past and it helps if you can tape him acting stupid then the law will deal him in the form of a civil suit. There are noise ordinances for him reving his truck.
