Our nation started off with New York City as its Capital. This was to induce New York to ratify the Constitution.
In the 19th Century the U.S. moved its Capital to Washington D.C.

As a sidelight, during our Civil War, Lincoln steadfastly refused to refer to the States in Secession anything but "being out of their proper relation with the rest of the States."

The Confederate States of America established their 1st Capital at Montgomery, Alabama, and later moved it to Richmond, Virginia.

So, using Lincoln's language, our National Capitals have been, in order, New York City, Washington D.C., Washington D.C. and Montgomery, Alabama considering the Confederate Capital to be U.S. territory, Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia with the same proviso, and finally, Washington D.C.
