Consciousness is a quality of the mind generally regarded to comprise qualities such as subjectivity, self-awareness, sentience, sapience, and the ability to perceive the relationship between oneself and one's environment. That which is beyond definition.
Well conciousness according to Descartes would be our imaginings and perceptions, viewed from a point, in space and time, i was going to write down what sufis think of the subject but u stated you don't want a religious answer so .........hhmmm.

Our conciousness is our awareness of everything around and in us - it's a part of our mind. I don't know if I can answer why we have it - I think that's beyond what we're capable of. Think of it this way - if we didn't have it, how could you even think of to answer this question. It's everything, yet undefinable.

Well, there's no scientific answer.

Science has yet to fathom this part of the mind/brain and has not even found a part of the body that is responsable for this.

i guess that all matter evolves i think that everything question its purpose all we really are its elements we are just figured out how to use whats around us
