I want to nominate one of my Professor's for an award in excellent teaching. We have to get a minimum of 2 supporters from each of the following: students, faculty, administration, and former students. Anyway, would the Dean in my field of studies be classified as an "administrator" and if so, would it be appropriate to email the Dean and ask him if he is willing to become a supporter? Or is this very inappropriate?

It is possible that all Deans are on the committee that selects the winners of the award.

However, you don't know who is on the committee, so it is certainly appropriate for you to email the Dean (or the Dean's administrative assistant) and ask.

I'd suggest that you go to the department chair first, though. The chair could be considered either faculty or administration, and s/he most likely could also tell you who is going to be on the committee.

I hope your professor wins! S/he is certainly fortunate to have a student that is so appreciative of his/her work! :)

The dean is there to help you and if he/she isn't teaching any classes then they are considered an administrator. I would say it was appropriate to email and ask...the worst they can do is say no.
Good luck!
