You are just asking for trouble by disabling your firewall, especially if you are going to use peer-to-peer file sharing. These sites are loaded with spyware and Trojan Horses. Your firewall is your first line of defense without it your computer is toast. There are safer alternatives. If you use Rapidshare, tech-recipe.com has a guide on how to optimize speed:

"Hacks to Beat Rapidshare Download Limits and Waiting Time" (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/869/rapidshare_hacks_beat_download_limits_waiting_time)

I don't know which p2p you use, but there are a lot of guides to improve speed on the Web.

Never disable your firewall when you're online, you are giving others direct access to your hard drive.

You shouldn't do that. Plus I use a firewall and download from limewire with no problem.
