Since over half of the marriages these days winds up in divorce, how will this impact society in the future, and younger generations (twenty somethings). Will this have a positive/negetive effect on people's relationships. The marriage rate is down - is this bad?

Sure its bad. It destroys the family values of morals and values. The older generations are responsible for setting a good example for the generations that follow and if we cant set a good example to follow then how can we even begin to expect them to change the world for the better. We are slowly destroying the entire world including the sanctity of family and marriage. The younger generation is looking at why bother when it comes to marriage if all its going to do is end in divorce. So as marriages go down the drain,so does the family and what will become of the future if no one is around that knows the difference between right and wrong. We can see actual damage that is being done by two income families where there is no adult supervision for the kids, and juvenile crime goes up dramatically. We already have an increase in live in relationships among the younger generation which says they would rather have the ease of just walking out on a relationship rather than face the pain of divorce. If we just dont care about marriage and family anymore then what else wont we care about in the near future. With the downturn of marriages,we are becoming more like animals with multiple partners and who cares attitude of whom we have children by. Unfortunately this is headed to get worse before it gets better

Well, my parents are divorced and re-married and happy.
As a twenty-something now engaged to a wonderful man, it does change how you look at marriage and life in general. If you are not careful, being the child of divorced parents can really warp your sense of right and wrong in relationships. It is sort of a catch twenty-two. In some ways, my parents divorcing was for the best. They are both happier now. But on the flip side, it made my sister and I both question the point of marriage. Our parents were together for 24 years before they split! I think it depends on the person as far as if it Will have a negative or positive effect.

The younger generations are already jumping into marriage way too soon in their relationships without fully thinking it over.
Nobody is willing to put in that extra effort to make a marriage work and last. Everybody in today's society thinks that everything in a marriage is just supposed to fall perfectly into your lap - no effort required.
Most people are already swearing off marriage for life because their parents and friends, etc have all divorced and they think that marriage isn't worth it and why bother?
Nobody's going to bother getting married anymore. Especially since the rate of premaritial sex has sky-rocketed.
Marriage will become redundant.
And it's saddening.

This will have a very negative effect on society. The very root of traditional marriage will start to disentigrate and more couples will start to cohabit. Premarital sex rates among people's relationships will increase and the chances of a serious relationship will decrease. The marriage rate going down is very bad because the younger generations will get the wrong message about marriage. They will think that marriage is the wrong way to go in life and immoral behaviors such as premarital sex and cohabition will be encouraged and engraved in the younger generations' minds.

Selflessness is giving way to selfishness of late which is the root cause of failed marriages. The welfare of children was high priority before 1950s in America and parents took pride in grooming their children into responsible citizens. In recent years the welfare of children is the biggest casualty as reported in The state of our union, 2005 report. Here is a passage from the report:

The report states Americans on average are having fewer children and currently less than 33 percent of all households include children. That compares to 1960 when slightly less than 50 percent of all households included children. It is projected that by 2010 only 28 percent of American households will include children. This declining figure and the diminishing presence of children in a majority of households inevitably results in fewer homes, neighborhoods, and communities where the interests of children hold high priority. Of the households that do contain children, a significant percentage fail to provide the stability a child needs. The report noted the increased percentage of children growing up in fragile homes due to increases in divorce, out-of-wedlock births, and unmarried cohabitation.

Overwhelming data shows the best environment in which children thrive and grow is a stable, harmonious home with both biological parents.

I hope you realize that our children are our future and if we do not provide the best environment for their growth then we are jeopardizing our own future.

Your just making figures up.........positive people will always take the positive out of these things and the gloomy fockers will still be gloomy....society is only affected by education.... and for people to divorce it shows that they have learned something that they did not like about that person so it's a good thing.....if you think people give upto easily...that is just a reflection on themselves.....

I personaly feel that the affects will be that you may not know the person might just be related to you.
And that goes also for the egg and sperm doners. It is going to become a sociaty that everyone in the world is related by first blood.

I think that all this is doing is giving bad examples on how parents handle things. They decide, ok i give up i hate you, get away, and they dont deal with there problems. And this is giving there kids bad examples.

Eventually marriage won't be sacred. It won't be taken seriously, as if it is something you do to pass time.
