ok well.....

PS2: Mostly like teen games...i'm not really sure about family games though as i don't have 1 but my friends do.... I think these are about $129 now...

Gamecube: Mostly child games and more family oriented games but there are a few mature games like Resident Evil... I think this is about $99

Xbox 360: Mostly Teen and Mature games... some family games(fuzion frenzy 1/2)...around $400

Also I'm not sure if you know about the replacements for the PS2 and Gamecube...

Nintendo Wii: This is the next-gen console from Nintendo (made gamecube)... still more family oriented ... has motion sensors in the controllers to make the games interactive and not just sit on the couch and move a thumbstick....This was recently released and they're at $250 if u can find them

PS3: No way you're gonna find one before the 25th... Mostly teen games again... these were $600 at launch I believe...there was only 400,000 shipped and no more are being shipped before Christmas...

Incase you aren't sure what I mean by teen or mature thats the ESRB(Entertainment Software Rating Board) ratings.
The system is as follows:

EVERYONE
Titles rated E (Everyone) have content that may be suitable for ages 6 and older. Titles in this category may contain minimal cartoon, fantasy or mild violence and/or infrequent use of mild language.

EVERYONE 10+
Titles rated E10+ (Everyone 10 and older) have content that may be suitable for ages 10 and older. Titles in this category may contain more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal suggestive themes.

TEEN
Titles rated T (Teen) have content that may be suitable for ages 13 and older. Titles in this category may contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent use of strong language.

MATURE
Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

ADULTS ONLY
Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.

Also I would say if you're willing to buy the PS3 don't and just buy the Wii and the 360 for the same price so that you get the family gameplay, the interactivity, and more mature games for the older members of your family

Ha! someone said go to E-Bay for best deals. Wrong. This is about as far from the truth as you can get when talking about the newest consoles. Right now, the hot ones are Ps3, Wii, and 360. I really liked the PS3 but wheni went to walmart the other day, i got hooked on a Wii. The concept of the controls is such a great idea. However, if you're not looking for the hot of the holidays, PS2 is better than the gamecube. The wii is about 200 - 300 and the others range from 500 - 650!! Insane. 360 and Playstations are more so eye-candy than anything. PS3 has very few games out right now, 360 has about double that. Wii is exploding with new games weekly. Advice: Don't buy the PS2 or Gamecube. Their games are soon to be out of production. Hope you have a nice holiday season!

Xbox 360 is the newest and probably the best choice overall. However, I would also advise PS2 because it has been out a while and there are many fun games. But, if I am not mistaken, you can also play Xbox games (from the original system) on the Xbox 360. In NO WAY would I recommend the Gamecube. It is good, fun, but up against the Xbox 360 and PS2, there is no question. If you have an older tv, PS2 might be better because Xbox 360 is best on a High Definition or newer tv.

Personally, I'd have to go with the Nintendo Wii. I'm sure everybody in your family will love it, whereas with the other consoles y'all would probably be more split into liking different types of games.

However, out of those three, I'd have to say go for the PS2. I personally believe that the Xbox 360 is a much better console with better games, but the PS2 has such a larger library of games that you really can't go wrong (especially with its current used price). For the PS2, everybody in your family can find a game to like. With the 360, the guys in the family will really like Gears of War. And then, with the Gamecube, well...just go with a Wii; the Wii also plays Gamecube games.

we had all three at one point or another.. we didn't like the gamecube very much and never really used it.. for the other two, they are both good and it just depends on the games you buy for it.. buy games that aren't particular to guys and girls if you have both cause that will cause fighting but instead get games like mario party and things like that.. for PS2 you can also play dvds if you don't already have a dvd player but the xbox 360 is still cool too

hope that helps a little

You should go with the Xbox 360 since it just came out last year and should be around for another 5 years.

Sony just came out with the PS3 two weeks ago so the PS2 will be obsolete come next year and Nintendo just came out with the WII two weeks ago also so the Gamecube should also be obsolete next year.

OK it depends which side you want to lean to if it is aily for the kids then the gamecube or even the wii. If its more mature then the PS2 or if its overaall family than the 360 will do. Hope I helped

ok this depends on the age of the kids. i would say game cube simply from the family point of view. trust me i actually own every system ever put out. the thing is with game cube its cheap & the majority of game are more family geared. i own a 360 not much out right now but the wii would be a 2nd choice for me actually hey my 75 year old dad wants to get one so that right there tells me something wii

none of the above lol. Def. get the Nintendo Wii if you are looking for something for the family. This console was specifically designed to gain interest in people of all ages. It has a low price tag. It also has easy controls and detects motion of the controller, so controls are easy to get used to for everyone. It also comes with Wii sports, which includes Baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, and boxing (this also makes great use to getting everyone used to the motion sensoring).

If you are looking for a console for a family, def. go with the Nintendo Wii (it also plays game cube games)
