Why anyone would say that it takes as much gas to start a car as to leave it idle for a minute is beyond me. Where does the gas go that is used to start the car? Logic would tell you that you save gas by turning it off when not in use.

The biggest question while waiting in the car is, “should I turn off my engine?” Starting up the car is equivalent to one minute of idling. So if you’re going to wait for more than a minute, then turn off the engine, and if you’re just grabbing something from the trunk, don’t shut off your car. Your name will suddenly change to Idiot.

1/4 Gallon for starting I think...but I think it's less than that for idling...maybe 10 mins I think...of course I'm no expert, but I swear I've heard that a few times.
