my own wedding planner/consultant business? I've already done some college in culinary arts and hospitality. What do I need to do? Should I start advertising and where? I already have a myspace.com acct-should I advertise there? Thanks

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How To Start A Wedding Planning Business by Cho Phillips, Sherrie Wilkolaski
* Start Your Own Wedding Consultant Business: Your Step-By-Step Guide to Success by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* FabJob Guide to Become a Wedding Planner by Catherine Goulet
* How to Start a Home-Based Event Planning Business by Jill Moran
* Start Your Own Event Planning Business: Your Step by Step Guide to Success by Krista Turner

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Go to your Local Library and get a good book
on How To Start A Business! Your Librarian if a good one will be glad to help you find such. A few libraries do have lazy libraians they just point to the aisle the books are at! Don't pay for advertising right away. Put ads on bulletin Boards and posting ads whereever U see other ads posted for free. Be fair don't cover up someone elses ad. Make Your ad stand out from the others! Send out Brochures or Announcements about your Business and why they should Use you rather than another doing the same kind of business. Don't degrade your competition cause if you do that they'll do that to you! Putting down other peoples businesses
is like killing your own business! Ask businesses how they started their business. Ask during their slow season not when their business at peak or busy!

Once you have your business registered and all... go to the local bridal shops and ask that they display your business card and brochures. If there is a bridal show in your area, find out who is the host company and how you can be a vendor at the show. You would be absolutely amazed at how much business you can pick up just standing around for a day. Good Luck. Another option is, read your local paper every day. When you see engagements announced, send a congrats package offering your services. Brides expect to start receiving stuff like that once their engagement is announced. The best thing to do is to keep pictures of the events you do plan so that way you can build your own reference list.

start with word of mouth, try anything for advertising that is free, like using your myspace, internet, blogs, word of mouth, friends, flyers, door to door. anything that is free or really cheap to get started, last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money and not get anywhere. all you need is one wedding to get you started and just make sure everyone knows who was in charge and they will think of you next time around
