I can only comment on Rome. Last December, we stayed at the Hiberia which is near the Trevi Fountain. We had a great room and could walk everywhere we wanted to go. We are in our late 50's so walking isn't as easy as it used to be. We booked through Venere.com. and got a great rate for a hotel in that area.
