4(2y+9) + 7y = -24
8y + 36 + 7y = - 24
15y + 36 = -34
15y + 36 - 36 = - 24 - 36
15y = - 60

4(2y+9)+7y=-24

first, ditribute the 4 across the parenthesis to simplify

8y+36+7y= -24
then combine the Y terms

15y+36=-24

then subtract 36 from both sides

15y=- 60

then you can figuer out the rest
