probably about a dozen countries in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and South America...it was everywhere over the decades in places like Korea, Congo, Vieetnam, Eastern Europe, Cuba...that's why we had attack submarines and aircraft carriers around the world...I had a friend in submarines in the 70's to 90's...he won't talk to me about the missions they did...the CIA was alive and well.

During the Cold War the USA tried to 'contain' communism wherever it appeared - Korea, Vietnam etc. USSR was their main enemy, although China made a strong claim as leader of the communist world by the 1970s.
The event that probably came closest to bringing the world to nuclear war was the Cuban missile crisis of 1962
