There is an old adage that says, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do..."

Before you enter into a foreign nation with different cultural values, know what their culture is by reading and talking to some of them native to that country, before going.

One of my anthropology professors went to observe a Native American tribe. He insulted them by participating in what was deemed stickily "women's work". This is a demonstration of the precedence of group over individualism. He did not fair well in building a relationship with that particular tribe. He created dis-harmony, by disrupting their social order.

Some cultures find it insulting to have beef or pork present for meals. Others find it rude and insulting to call women, men, while in other cultures it is an honor to be defined as the perceived powerful male, indicating power, rather than gender/sexuality. In Britain for instance being offered a cigarette is culturally acceptable, turning one down whether you smoke or not is an insult.

American cultural values are sometimes vastly different from those in other nations.

you should already have these answers by attending class. its a fascinating subject that I enjoyed, as it went to show the real reasons why we are different and act differently in each others environments.

you have to look at each groups cultural captial and their views on aspirations for their individual group, and how that is affected by the groups around them. also look at what group has the cultural hegemony and what that means for the minority group... assimilation perhaps?, as this affects relationships. communication deals with the greatest of all cultural tools: language, and this is the teaching tools for the apprentice that the teacher imparts all knowledge if their cultures capital. difficult for me to respond to without the full course content, but I know some of what you ask, but havent the time to expand upon them.
the road to glory is reserved for those that take the steps themselves...
