Like everyone else said, all countries use passports. If you're a citizen of some Central American countries (I can't tell you exactly which ones besides El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) they can use their ID cards for their country to cross the borders. If you're American and flying in from the States you just need a passport and have to buy a tourist card for $10 when you're there. They'll give you a certain number of days. Don't mess around with the system though, I lived there for a year and had to go through a huge mess just b/c they didn't believe my reason for being there. I did nothing wrong, but the gov't can be suspicious. You don't want to be caught in a Salvadorean jail!
