Because you want to put your message in front of people whom the medium reaches. The reason you know what these media are is that you have done research. You have identified your audience, your customers, your customer prospects. Because you know who these people are (their characteristics) who buy or will buy, you can discover where it is that these people get their information. Then you advertise there. Also, even though you may think you know all your customers, customer prospects, or persons whom you wish to influence, an ad in a pub may elicit a response that you had not looked for.

A famous ad in McGraw-Hill magazines (which wanted to sell ads LOL) featured an old codger sitting at his desk across from a salesman. The codger says: "I don't know you. I don't know your company. Now: What was it that you wanted to sell me?"

Your next question in Yahoo Answers should be: "Why is public relations so important in marketing?" In advertising, you can control the message. In public relations, you cannot control the message, but you get third-party endorsement. This means that a reporter writes a story according to your version. The reader gets the story. The reader understands that the story comes from the publication, not from the client. The message has more believability because the reporter wrote it.

Its the best way to get info about your product out. If people see commercial for a product a lot next time they at store they spot it they more likely to pick it up because they are familiar with the product.
