First of all, you should have a computer, keyboard, monitor etc. capable of running an operating system such as Windows. Speed of the computer does not matter. You can go online with the slowest PC ever, but remember things will work slow!
If you want dialup Internet connectivity, you will need an internal or external modem in your computer. For broadband connection (such as DSL or Cable), your ISP will provide you with the modem!

check out the computer you are using right now - it should be helpful.
I have a Intel Pentium M 725 (centrino) processor (1.6 GHz, 400 MHz 60 GB HD with DVD re writer and 512 MB DDR, wireless LAN and bluetooth. It's small compared to what's out there now, but it works just fine.
I edit movies, photos, download, play and store lots of music, browse quickly, use flash players, etc etc....

Well you need a modem. The 56k internal modem if you are using dial up. If you are using high speed then you need a network card but you then will need the modem for the cable/dsl line.
But basically you need the modem and network card
