I've been thinking of learning a programming language for quite some time and I've narrowed it down to a few. First of all, I am completely new to the programming field and would like to start out with a fairly easy to learn programming language that would allow me to create basic programs, while also allowing me to create online applications too. So far, the best language I have found is Ruby because of its simple structure and Ruby on Rails feature. However, many people have suggested Python too. Any suggestions?

you could start learning ruby.
Python has a complicated structure and syntax for beginners in my opinion.
If you're more interested in learning basics, i truly recommend learning good javascript instead...
ruby has the advantage in the database field. if you plan to do php or Python development, you need to know sql and database modeling. you still need some in ruby, but it's not so critical.
My experience in ruby is just theoretical, but i'm php developer and can say you that database access in php (and in other languages) is less than perfect.

You could also try visual basic, asp.net and so... express editions are of great quality.

Well I would guess that most the answers that you will get from here are going to say its what your going to do with the language, personally I think it is a matter of opinion, the reason being is that once you get up to a certain point, you will start to notice all languages are pretty much the same, and you only learn them to get the concepts (such as data structures and algorithm design). Personally I think all programming is, is a language and a state of mind. To answer your question, VB.net is pretty easy to start with but the real limit of that VB, is it is mostly propitiatory to Microsoft systems. I would recommend that you start with either C or C++, as they have a bit harder of a learning curve due to the editors you would use, but becoming a master in either would be wise (C++) since much of the business word stems off of C/C++ like code, Java, Actionsctiping, Lua...all have almost (if not exactly) the same syntax code as C++.

Good luck, and welcome to the world of programming!!!

Java will be a better choice to learn...because if you understand basics of Java, you will be able to code in different languages too. As most programming languages are using same logics of writing but using different tags to write them.

Are you going to be teaching yourself? I suggest going to your local Community College and see what classes they offer. I would suggest C++ or C#, or maybe Java (not javascript).
