Go Mardi Gras!

Decorate in Mardi Gras style with masks, streamers, confetti, daiquiris and any frozen concoction preferably accented with a paper parrot or umbrella. Balloons and beads are easy to come by and decidedly appropriate.

Make your house vibrant with mardi gras colors -- purple, green and gold. Visit your local craft store for papier-mache products, cardboard and felt - and make your own floats. Better yet, set up mini-stations in your house and ask guests - wearing crowns and masks and anything with a bell attached - to help set the mood.

For costumes, purple, green and gold – really, you could don almost anything as long as you stick with the basic color theme.

Debauchery reigns supreme: so anything you do in excess takes the cake. Think big beads, gold-trimmed outfits, doubloons, streamers, pirate-themed-booty and bold, brass and loud colors.

Why not set up a mask-making station? Provide plenty of supplies such as feathers, sequence and glitter, and see what unique masks your guests can make. When they are done, have everyone vote on the masks.

For food, you can order the official King Cake from most specialty bakeries. Or for a more homespun twist, bake cupcakes topped with gold and green and purple glitter.

Celebrate Mardi Gras as it was intended: splurge and feast on decadent dishes. Creamy sauces, hot-sauce spiked crawfish bread and jambalaya studded with fragrant sausage. Shrimp etoufee, stuffed jalapenos and deep-fried seafood served in hot bread doused in Tabasco-kissed mayonnaise are simple and traditional staples. Serve gumbo, red beans and rice, moon pies, King Cake, dips and crackers.

Play Mardi Gras related jazz, zydeco and dance music during the event.

Why not an old fashioned country birthday? Borrow someone's barn. Take hay and spread it around the barn, string some lights throughout and add streamers and balloons.Get a cd player and a good cd that you can play throughout the party. Have music to dance by if folks want to dance. Have sandwiches and chips. Prepare a place outside the barn to to build a fire. Have bowls of marshmallows and sticks for roasting. Get a little metal "foot" tub, the kind from Home Depot. Fill it with ice. Place a variety of bottles of pop, & water down inside the ice. Then everyone go for a hay ride. This little idea can "grow" into a mega party. Country not your style? Rent a pizza parlor for a couple of hours.

I don't know where you live, but if there's a city nearby, see if you can rent a limo to go into the city and go someplace fun. My friends and I went to the wax museum for my sweet 16, and it was sooo much fun. Pick places that you'll be able to take a lot of funny pictures at, so that you'll always remember it. And you can make CDs for the limo ride, or even a DVD montage of pics from when you were little to now. Also, pick out some cute invites and favors to go along with the city theme...www.partybasics.com has some invites that aren't too expensie and you can order small numbers of them.

Have a party that gives back to those less fortunate. Go to a children's hospital or homeless shelter and have a party for everyone. Or have a party where instead of a bunch of junk you won't use, people bring their pets and something to donate to the humane society. You can do games and have prizes to go with those themes. If you don't want to try any of those things, then I suggest a weekend at a spa with a bf or a day at a theme park with all your friends. Finally, you could try something at home, on the cheap like a decade theme (the 50's, 70's, 80's etc.) or a costume party with a theme (everyone dress as food, literary character, celebrity, etc.) Once again plan music and activities to compliment your party. Have fun and don't stress it.
