There is no doubt to me that Windows Vista will chuck everything that you have. So good backups would be a smart move.

But Windows XP was first sold that way. The first machines that used Windows XP were total DOGS. I would expect the same from today's computers that suffer with an upgrade to Windows Vista. So you will probably enjoy your computer's best performance if you stick with Windows XP.

Let's say that you have a 256MB RAM in your Video and 2GB of RAM in the main computer. Let's say that you are running Intel Core 2 Duo and have a real CRANKIN' RIG. Then go for the upgrade. But if you have a Pentium 4 with only 512MB of RAM and just 128 MB on your Video card, then stick with XP.

You know what... maybe you should take the FREE disk of Windows Vista, and sell it at e-Bay.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

unless you are a professional webmaster or computer employed person I would advise against upgrading to the new and un-exciting Windows Vista. You need to wait at least 6 months after it has been released so that Microsoft can provide updates to repair parts of the program that do not work properly.

There is really nothing in Vista that will help the average computer user that windows Xp will not already do.

AS for me and my computer we shall remain an XP version for as long as It is supported by Microsoft.

Wait at least 6 months before even thinking about upgrading. Vista is going to have a lot of teething troubles.

What they don't tell people is that the "Aero" feature in Vista eats battery power on laptops! So... if you're running on batts, you'll be wanting to disable Aero (which is apparently quite an irritating procedure).

Unfortunately if you do a true upgrade Vista will erase your hard drive and start over from scratch. You can choose to have it try to save some of your files, however I just recommend backing up your documents, pictures, movies and other data files. Then reinstall your software after letting Vista wipe your hard drive and upgrade your OS.

That depends on whether you want to reformat and install or just upgrade from the existing version. Of course you would probably want to backup your most important data either way. In your case you wouldn't lose your existing data with a free upgrade.
