I separate into three different piles. One pile for white clothes, one for dark colors and one for lighter colors. I've never had a problem with any of the colors fading or changing their color.

You separate whites from colored. The colored clothes are further separated into dark and light colors. You launder the dark blues blacks, dark green, reds and maroons together and greys and other lighter clothes together. Sometimes I out the lights with the whites when i am not using bleach.

I always like to keep ALL strong colored fabrics separated from whites or pale colors, and I always find it best to separate fabrics that are very different, - cottons or lightweight fabrics separate from heavier garments like sweats , washable knitted fabrics etc. And you don't want to wash husband's white underwear and T-shirts along with your lingerie. Actually I don't do lingerie in the washing machine, even on the "delicate" cycle. but if you are going to, you need to do it separate, and its better to use a mesh lingerie bag so it doesn't get all twisted up.

I separate whites, darks, and brights. Darks includes black, blue, maroon, red; Brights is yellow, pink, light blue, light green, any lighter colors. Sometimes I put brights in with whites. The only stuff I put on hot is underwear (except bras, lacy things, fuzzy boxers, silk boxers), towels, and sheets; everything else goes on cold.

4.Jeans and other pants in dk colors(that is if you have a big enough load, you can mix them with dk colors if you don't have very many)

Whites should be washed by themselves. Colors such as navy and black together..and then red by itself. Red and black sometimes run on each other so I wash them separately.
