Just crop the image with paint. Load it into paint, use the square selection tool to select the part of the image you want, then paste it into a new paint file. Then just adjust the size of the canvas if you need to shrink the white background of the default canvas.

For anything more complex, use and editing program like photoshop, gimp, picasso, etc.

Press printscreen to grab your screenshot.

Open MSPaint (I suggest paint as everyone tends to have it!).

Click edit and then paste.

Select the dotted rectangle and with it, select the area you want to grab.

Click edit and copy again.

Select file, then new. You will notice there is a white area and at the bottom right corner there is a little blue dot which you can move around to resize the window. Drag the little blue dot so that the white window is very small.

Click edit and paste and the area you have selected will appear on screen without any of the white edges.

If it's a non-rectangular area then it's more tricky!

Simplest way with best control - download and install Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com

Start Irfanview and minimise it. Get the screen showing what you want to grab, and press PrtScrn. Maximise Irfanview and click Edit > Paste

Now immediately drag a rectangle around the area you want to zoom in on. Release the mouse button. If you want to adjust this selection marquee, you can right-drag it inside it to move the whole thing, or drag a side by rolling the mouse slowly over a side until it is a double arrow.

When you're satisfied, click Edit > Crop Image and you're finished - just save it as whatever file name and type you like File > Save As

Irfanview gives you the best screenshot experience for zero money.

Put it in paint (or preferably photoshop if you have it). Then select the unwanted items (using marquee) then erase them. Then, after only your desired piece is left, select it with marquee, move it to the top left of the canvas. Then go to the bottom right and grab the little resize box. Drag it up to the corner of your item. Now you should be done.
