I was sort of under the impression that there was federal legislation passed in the last few years which made it mandatory that satellite providers had to offer the local channels.

Do you use Dish Network? If so, they offer local channels. But they charge. If you go to radio shack you can buy a cheap TV antenna (about $20) and that should work great if you can get it up in your attic. Note that many local stations are now digital - so your dish box will need to have a digital or HD tuner to pick those broadcasts up. Once you can, you will get ABC, CBS, and NBC in high-def wide screen (well, during prime time hours). Good luck!

Your cable company may provide a service called "basic/basic"
We have it through our cable provider, Comcast, and it costs around $12/mo. For that, we get all the local stations and the local public access stations plus a few others.
The only catch is that it's not available to you if you've been a cable subscriber previously at that location within a certain timeframe...I think it's a year.
