Personally, I like the new AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

I highly recommend Trend Micro's Pc-Cillin, it is by far better than McAfee or Norton, and it uses less of your systems resources to accomplish the same goal of protecting your computer.

I agree that Norton tends to use a lot of system resources. I currently use Panda and I barely notice it's there.

Free anti-virus are often better choice than Norton or McAfee.
