They are actually ultrasonic cleaners and jewelers use them all the time.

Ultrasonic cleaners send a sound wave through the cleaning solution which vibrates the dirt and grime off the piece of jewelry. It is particularly useful for jewelers when polishing a piece of jewelry--it is very effective at removing the polishing compound from a piece.

Dentists also use ultrasonic cleaners for dentures, castings, etc. Many have an ultrasonic that has a wand attached that allows the ultrasonic to be used directly in a patient's mouth.

Stones should not be loosened from their setting in an ultrasonic unless the stones are already loose and the grime is the only thing holding them in place.

However, certain stones should not be placed in an ultrasonic including but not limited to emeralds, pearls, turquoise, and any stone with an obvious flaw in it.

I have used one and they definitely work!!! I think its the waves it produces when it vibrates that clean it. be careful with precious jewellery (you know like ur mums ring or something) as it can loosen stones/diamonds etc.
