There was a need to reformulate the theory of gravity after the developement of the special theory of relativity. Now most people probably would have tried to explain gravity within the context of the special theory of relativity, but not our good buddy Einstein. He was inspired to create general relativity by considering the relativity of acceleration. (the special theory deals with the relativity of velocity)
